Career Search Tips

Where to Begin

Getting started:
Whether you are a student who is in their first years of college, or an experienced individual who is reevaluating their career choices, early preparation and planning will help give you a competitive edge. When you begin to think about your plans for the future, here are a few questions that may help:

  • What are you looking for in a career?
  • What are your priorities in choosing a career?
  • What are your objectives and expectations for a career?
  • What type of work environment or culture best suits you?

When evaluating different companies for career opportunities, we know that the benefits and rewards are important factors. However, we encourage you to consider the following key factors during your decision making process; training and development, the company’s growth and stability, the size of the organization, the leadership and management style of the company, corporate philosophies, day-to-day responsibilities, and culture. If you begin to assess how important these are to you, you’ll be on the right track to finding a good match for you!

What are your avenues for finding potential employers?

  • Career Center - Register with the career center, attend career fairs, and conduct on campus interviews.

  • Utilize the Internet, newspaper advertisements, and trade publications.
  • Conduct informational interviews to learn more about your field, occupation, industry, or potential employer.
  • Join professional societies and participate in group meetings to meet peers in your chosen field.
  • Think about temporary work to get your foot in the door. It’s your inside track to finding out about job opportunities within that organization.
